THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT RARITY & UNCIRULATED
This 160 year old coin may be the only 1860 Pikes Peak on all of eBay in any condition.
The 1860 Clark Gruber & Co $10 gold company founded in 1860–during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush! This mint aimed to standardize gold currency in the territory. The ‘Mountain’ $10 is one of the most significant territorial issues ever minted, and one that encapsulates the mania of the Gold Rush era.
They minted gold coins using locally sourced ore until 1863 when our US Government purchased the facility & eventually becoming the Denver mint part of the US Treasury.
Over its nearly three years of operation, the company minted $594,305 worth of gold coins and also dealt with large quantities of raw gold. When the territory of Colorado was created in 1861, questions arose about the need for a branch mint in Denver, and thus Clark, Gruber and Company sold their building to the United States Mint, and the Denver mint was born.
This was the only year that featured the Pikes Peak motif; later coins from the firm used the liberty head design.
Only 3,000 were known to be minted in 1860 & perhaps 25 -30 are known to exist and perhaps a handful Uncirculated today.
A Pikes Peak MS 61 sold at a Heritage Auction in 2024 for $114,000 & its a documented sale.
Note that the year 1860….$10 is roughly equivalent to $400 today. and could feed a family of four for a full week in 1860. Average salaries then was $10 a week!
These coins are immediately recognized for their design that is unique in American numismatic history.
The obverse carries the legend PIKES PEAK GOLD with DENVER below the central motif and TEN D. along the lower border. The reverse looks almost gem-like and has an eagle with spread wings resembling the federal design with CLARK GRUBER & CO. around and 1860 below. Light green-gold surfaces show sharp edging on the high points that are shown with the uncirculated MS 60 grade by NGC.
The fields are reflective and no trivial marks, dings and no hairlines as most circulated and AU coins & again, the reverse looks like a much higher grade with very sharp edging. The fields on both sides are reflective and with subtle hues.
